Sometimes, we have to remember that we started out as a couple.
Date nights are nice, yet, weekends are better.

We decide on the area, pick our hotel level and cap the price on a certain amount and viola... A Nice couple weekend.
Other ideas include Bed & Breakfast, Camping & Mountain Retreat. Being close to the Los Angeles port, a couple can even take a weekend cruise.
One great idea that someone had suggested to me was a "structured" Couples Retreat. Many religious associations plan them annually. Professional marriage enrichment retreats are offered in every state. Here are a couple of links:
